5 Uses for Peppermint Oil

When life gets you down, the many uses for peppermint oil can help you get back up! Organic peppermint essential oil is powerful and versatile, here are just a few of our favorite ways to use it!

· Headache and Migraine Relief – In herbal medicine, peppermint essential oil has long been a favorite remedy for headaches and migraines. Now, there are also some scientific studies to back that up! Peppermint contains menthol, which is the same compound used in many topical pain-relieving products found in drugstores. Menthol produces a cooling effect that helps ease painful muscle contractions in the head and neck. Peppermint also helps encourage blood flow to the area it's applied to, which can decrease tension from headaches. To treat headaches and migraines, dilute peppermint oil with a mild carrier oil (jojoba oil or kitchen staples like coconut oil or olive oil work great!) and massage into your forehead, neck, or wherever you feel tension.

· Relief for Itchy Skin The same cooling properties that help relieve headaches also make peppermint essential oil great for itch relief! If you’re dealing with itchy skin due to bug bites, dryness, or other irritation, try applying diluted peppermint oil. One study revealed that peppermint oil even provided relief for chronic itching issues! Note: We don’t recommend applying peppermint oil to broken skin.

·

Treating Nausea – In traditional aromatherapy and herbalism practices, the inhalation of peppermint oil is often used to treat nausea and it works for many people. A clinical trial in 2020 also found that inhaling peppermint oil helped reduce the “frequency, duration, and severity of nausea and vomiting in people recovering from heart surgery.” If you suffer from car sickness or frequent nausea, try keeping a bottle of peppermint oil on hand! · Relief for Menstrual Cramp Pain – Many people find that peppermint oil comes to the rescue for period cramps. Try adding a few drops of peppermint oil to a tablespoon of coconut oil or sweet almond oil and massaging into your lower abdomen.

· Energy Boost – Peppermint oil can help energize, prevent fatigue, and stimulate the senses! Try diffusing before or during your workout, or while getting ready for work in the morning. If you need some energy on your way to work, try adding peppermint oil to a car diffuser!
